I’m Cara Kennedy and this summer I had the incredible opportunity of being a Youth Champion with Sussex Clubs for Young People delivering the UK Youth project Money for Life.
Money for Life teaches young people how taxes work, how payslips work, how to save money, how to avoid fraud and much more! This means that we are giving young people the skills they need to be financially capable, which is a necessity for life. My time as a Youth Champion not only taught me all this as well, but gave me confidence when leading groups and helped to realise that youth work might be something I want to do as a career.
Being a Youth Champion has given me the opportunity to gain further paid work opportunities with SCYP, and I am now working as a Youth Support Worker for Hassocks Youth Hangout and am the Coordinator for Adur and Worthing Youth Council. The whole experience culminated in me getting the opportunity to go to London to meet the people from UK Youth running the program. I met with Christina and Patrick from UK Youth, who were both lovely, and we had a conference call with the programs funders, Lloyds Banking Group. I got to speak about my first-hand experience as a Youth Champion delivering Money for Life. It was amazing to learn just how much of an impact the programme has had already, and it really made think about how great the need for it is still.
