PROGRAMME OF EVENTS FOR 2021/22


Sussex Clubs for Young People work with practitioners across Sussex with decades of experience to bring you a variety of training opportunities at highly subsidised prices, with this in mind, we have organised the following training courses for you, your volunteers and your young people.

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce our Training and Development Manager Michelle Old, who will be facilitating the Young Leaders and Introduction to Youth Work courses. Michelle has worked with young people in a variety of settings, and has also worked for the National Youth Agency writing and delivering course materials to train Youth Workers. 

Our staff attend these courses, so we know how good they are, book your place/s soon as they fill up quick.

Young Leaders
Residential Training

Lodge Hill Centre – Pulborough, West Sussex RH20 1LZ

Dates: Friday 19th to Sunday 21st November 2021

Times: 6pm Friday, 11am Saturday to 3pm Sunday

Cost: £50.00 per young person

Our programme for Young Leaders seeks to improve the skills of young people and volunteers who have grown in your club setting.

This programme is ideal for young people aged 14+ with sufficient independence and willingness to stretch themselves further. We recommend sending your young leaders on their own or in groups of no more than three so that they get the best experience of challenging themselves and learning more from others.

Young Leaders can take it to the next level by completing a UK Youth Achievement Award or a Duke of Cornwall Community Safety Award.

Certificated course Level 1 or 2. Accommodation and food are included.

Introduction to Youth Work

Dormans Youth Arts Centre – Dormans, Gossops Green, Crawley RH11 8HZ

Dates: Saturday 29th January and Saturday 26th February 2022

Times: 11am to 5pm both days

Cost: £48.00 per person

The Introduction to Youth Work Course is a 2-day course that offers participants an opportunity to explore key principles, themes and models related to youth work practice.

Learning outcomes include: 

An increased understanding of the purpose and principles that underpin youth work practiceHow to build professional relationships with young peopleExploring confidentiality and personal boundariesAnti-Oppressive Practice- what does this mean and how is it embedded in our work with young peopleSafeguarding- an overview of key terms and processesThe course will be delivered using a variety of methods. These include group work, discussions, PowerPoint slides, videos and case-studies.

This course is facilitated by Michelle Old who has extensive experience within the Youth Work Sector. She has worked with young people in a variety of settings and has over thirteen years management experience.

Michelle has also worked for the National Youth Agency writing and delivering course materials to train Youth Workers.

Both days  must be attended.

Safeguarding –
Child Protection – Level 3

Maybridge Keystone Centre – Raleigh Way, Worthing BN12 6JD

Dates: Wednesday 5th January 2022

Times: 10am to 16.15pm

Cost: £30.00 per person (For members only)

This one-day course aims to raise awareness of child protection and the issues surrounding abuse, along with its effects on children. It is more scenario based, helping participants gain a greater practical understanding and application of this subject, to their work situation. It is designed for staff / trustees and volunteers working in charitable organisations or a care environment.

It is facilitated by Matthew Plumridge who is a specialist trainer and consultant to the charity sector with 30 years of experience supporting small, medium and large UK and international charities. He has delivered training across the UK, Jersey, Denmark and France and specialises in Safeguarding, Volunteer Management, Recruitment, Retention and a number of personal development courses.

Course Aims

  • Gain a general overview of safeguarding and child protection issues
  • Realise the long-term impact of abuse on those affected by it
  • Identify your organisation’s responsibilities in relation to child protection


Course Objectives

  • Establish what ‘safeguarding’ is and where you / your organisation fits into it
  • Identify how children can be abused and what signs to look for
  • Review a number of safeguarding scenarios
  • Discuss how to reduce potential risks within your organisation
